Travers; What, When, How, and Why

with Jo-Anne Young

The Travers (aka Haunches-In) is the next logical step after achieving the Shoulders-In to gymnastically develop horses and riders. This movement is not just for dressage, but it is useful to further develop a horse’s balance and power in the hocks, fetlocks, and stifles. It also helps the horse to further lighten its forehand and become more elastic. Riders in this session are given step by step coaching as they work through the fundamentals of achieving this movement with their horses.

Running time: 42 minutes

Jo-Anne Young still gets goosebumps when a rider has a “lightbulb” moment, even though she has been teaching for over 60 years. She became a CHA Certifier in 1987 and was (now retired) the Equestrian Program Director of Houghton University for numerous years. She is grateful for the many people who have supported her pursuit of excellence through the years, especially her mentor, Olympic coach Walter Zettl, whom she studied with for 25 years. Jo-Anne believes that teaching allows her to “pay forward” to the next generation all the blessings that have been poured into her own equestrian life and beyond.
