Building Horsemanship Into Riding Lessons

with Chauntel Gilliland

Get the chance to see how Chauntel Gilliand starts to introduce students to the concepts of advanced techniques such as collection and extension, half-halts, and isolating movements of the horse in such a way that doesn’t overwhelm new or amateur students before they climb into the saddle. Then watch the students as they put those skills to practice as they learn breathing techniques, the motto of “hands are always last” and the concepts of riding with proper use of seat and legs. Chauntel introduces several unmounted and mounted exercises that teach her students how to become aware of what the horse is doing and explore ways to effectively change what the horse is doing through the concepts presented.

Running time: 49 minutes

Chauntel Gilliland’s ethos defines horsemanship as the holistic practice that encompasses the entirety of the equine sport in a way that centers the horse in the relationship. Chauntel is a CHA Level 3 Certified Riding Instructor, an active volunteer in New York 4-H, and the Director for the Northern Region on New York State Horse Council. In 2020 she was awarded NYS Horsewoman of the Year. She currently owns and operates CSG Horsemanship LLC, in Willsboro, New York, on her family’s working cattle and sheep farm. With her diverse background, Chauntel’s program is focused on building good horsemanship regardless of discipline.
